Georges Jacques Danton (French: [ʒɔʁʒ dɑ̃tɔ̃]; 26 October 1759 – 5 April 1794) was a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution and the first President of the Committee of Public Safety. An unknown and thoroughly respectable young lawyer in Paris at the outset of the French Revolution, Georges-Jacques Danton quickly achieved celebrity as a neighborhood militant spearheading a grass-roots challenge to the constitutional monarchists who had come to power in July 1789. Danton was elected to the National Convention in September 1792 and rose through its ranks and voted for the execution of Louis XVI. He became the first president of the Committee of Public Safety, set up following the abolishing of the French monarchy in 1793. This led to the so-called Reign of Terror. Danton, Georges Jacqueszhōrzh zhäk däNtôN´ [key], 1759–94, French statesman, one of the leading figures of the French Revolution. A Parisian lawyer, he became a leader of the Cordeliersearly in the Revolution and gained popular favor through his powerful oratory.
